Rabbit Care 101: What Should I Feed My Bunny?

bunny

At Aliso Beach Animal Clinic, we love and care for all exotic pets—but we’ll admit, rabbits have a special place in our hearts. Whether it’s wellness check-ups, urgent medical attention, surgery, or even boarding, our experienced team is here to provide compassionate, specialized care for your bunny.

One of the most common questions we get from new (and even experienced) rabbit owners is:
“What should I feed my rabbit?”

Great question! Nutrition is one of the most important aspects of exotic pet care. For rabbits, proper diet isn’t just about keeping them full—it’s essential for their digestive and dental health, longevity, and overall happiness.

First Things First: Good Husbandry is Key

Unlike dogs and cats, rabbits haven’t been domesticated for thousands of years. They still retain many of their wild instincts and biological needs. That means we, as pet parents, need to do our best to mimic their natural environment—including their diet, habitat, temperature, and lifestyle.

The Ideal Rabbit Diet: A Simple Formula

Here’s a quick breakdown of what a healthy daily diet should look like for your bunny:

  • 85% Hay
The foundation of a rabbit’s diet should always be hay. It supports gut health and keeps their ever-growing teeth in check. We recommend:
    • Timothy
    • Orchard
    • Oat
    • Brome
  • 10% Fresh Vegetables
Think leafy greens! Some of our bunny patients’ favorites include:
    • CilantroDandelion greensEndivesSpring greens

  • 5% High-Quality Pellets
These should supplement, not replace, hay and veggies. About one handful per day is perfect for an adult rabbit.
  • Less than 5% Fruit & Treats
Fruits are best kept as occasional treats. And remember—human food, dog biscuits, or table scraps are never safe for rabbits.
